Keeping Toddlers Happy
63
Sometimes toddlers have tantrums especially when they don’t get what they want. Tantrums are normal but should not be disregarded. These are common to kids and should be dealt with accordingly. Parents should keep in mind that when children get away with what they want, they may become harder to discipline in the future. It is okay if parents give in sometimes but not all the time. Also, it is okay too to let children cry and let them realize that they cannot get the things they want to have all the time. Making kids understand that there’s a limit or boundary helps them be aware that they should work hard for what they want.
Setting spanking aside, there are other things that parents can do to make their child disciplined and happy. They can tell their kid which things can be given to them and which could not. Explain to them why such things cannot be given. Tell this in a manner that does not make the child intimidated and angry with you. They may not really understand this but explaining to them at an early age would help too.
Show them toys that they may want and ask if they like it. Teach them to choose those toddler educational toys to enhance their skills and brain development. Constant exposure to such may have a positive impact such as making them smarter and understand things easily. Eventually, the child becomes happy when he is bought this toy.
Another thing to ensure happiness of the child is to treat him outside sometimes. Take them to the mall, zoo or park. The interaction with other children builds up his self-esteem and self-confidence which are important as they grow. Without these two, they may grow up a loner or an introvert. Though there is nothing wrong with being such, the things are people should also be able to socialize with people coming from all walks of life.
Acknowledging and commending the child “well done” is another great gesture of keeping him happy. A mere pat on the back and telling him “very good” is a big thing for him. He now realizes that he is able to do something good that people actually like and appreciate.
Rewards may be given at times but are not necessary. They should learn that they should do well not because of the incentive that will be given but because it feels right. Rewards are mere representations of the true value of the goodness done. Also, self-fulfillment comes a long way for an individual. Success is perhaps the only thing that can truly make a person feel proud and good about himself.
In addition, happiness can also be felt when the child is contented and satisfied with the things that he has. Example of which is having a bonded and complete family. There are kids that wish their parents were still together making kids having a complete family feel that they are luckier.
But the best thing any parent can give in order to make a child truly happy is love and support. Parents should constantly tell their kids that they love them. Telling this regularly makes a kid feel secured because he knows that there is someone going to take care and love him as he is.
